Do Online Marriage Retreats Actually Work?
Online marriage retreats are effective for most couples who fully participate and complete the sessions. At Renovation Marriage, our own online workshop produces the same results as our in-person weekend, with 98% of couples reporting significant progress.
What do we mean by “online marriage retreat”? An online marriage retreat is a structured, web-based program a couple completes from home, working through the same guided sessions and exercises that an in-person weekend covers.
What does the research say about online marriage help?
The most direct comparison came out of Brigham Young University. Stephen Duncan and his colleagues took the same marriage education content, delivered it two ways, once online and once traditionally in person, and compared the outcomes in the Journal of Couple and Relationship Therapy. The positive results of the web version came out equivalent to the in person format.
In a controlled trial published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Dr. Brian Doss and his colleagues tested a web-based relationship program with 300 couples nationwide. They found that couples who had some live contact with a coach were significantly more likely to finish. So the content helped, but having a human checking in helped make it stick.
What doesn’t translate to a screen?
In fairness, there are a few things about an in-person marriage retreat that don’t work for very couple, and you should know them before deciding.
1. You don’t leave. There’s real power in driving somewhere, checking into a hotel, and being away from your usual environment with all its distractions. Home comes with laundry, a doorbell, and a dog who needs out at the worst possible moment.
2. You lose the room. At an in-person weekend, you look around and see thirty other couples fighting for their marriage. That quiet solidarity does something a screen can’t reproduce.
3. Self-paced can become never-paced. Without a hard start time, “we’ll do it this weekend” turns into three weekends from now, then never.
4. Nobody is watching. In a room, you finish the exercise. At home, you can skip the hard one and tell yourself you’ll come back to it later.
If you want the in-person picture for comparison, here’s what a marriage intensive weekend actually looks like.
What an online marriage retreat does well
An online marriage retreat keeps those parts of the weekend that actually lead to change, which is why the results hold up. Here’s what our online marriage retreat keeps from the in-person weekend.
1. The same nine sessions. Same content, same sequence, same exercises as the in-person weekend. Nothing was trimmed for the online version.
2. Real workbooks, mailed to your house. You work with paper and a pen in your hands.
3. A private hour with a coach or counselor. On Saturday evening, when you work through the primary exercise of the weekend, you can schedule a one-hour Zoom call with a marriage coach at no extra cost. This is the live human contact the research says improves results for couples.
4. Complete privacy. Sessions are pre-recorded, so no other couple sees you, and nobody watches you walk into a hotel ballroom in your own town.
5. The same guarantee and the same price. $500 per couple, in five monthly payments if that helps. Financial assistance is available if it is still out of reach, and a full refund if you finish and don’t believe it helped.
Erin and I have coached over 1,000 couples through this workshop. When we shifted the online sessions to a pre-recorded format, we were surprised at the results. We expected the positive impact to decrease a bit, but couples told us the pause button was actually one of the most beneficial parts of the weekend and made it even better.
Why the pause button changes things
For the online workshops, we publish specific weekend dates and recommend couples follow the same schedule that we use for the in-person workshop. When you have a predetermined start time, it increases the likelihood that you do actually start. If you need more time for any reason, you can pause the session and take longer with an activity or conversation. You can even delay a session to the next day.
At an in-person weekend, we have to keep the group on schedule, so sometimes couple’s conversations get cut short. At home, though, nothing interrupts you but you.
| Choose in person if | Choose online if |
|---|---|
| You need to physically get away to focus | You can’t travel, or there’s no workshop within driving distance |
| Your home is loud, crowded, or full of interruptions | You have a door that closes and a weekend you can protect |
| You’d both quietly skip it without a schedule holding you to it | You’d rather set your own pace and take longer when needed |
| Being around other couples working on their marriage would encourage you | Privacy matters more to you than solidarity |
| Travel and a hotel are within reach | Childcare, work, or cost make a weekend away impossible |
If you’re also weighing this against weekly counseling, our comparison of a marriage intensive and weekly counseling breaks down that decision.
What makes an online marriage retreat actually work?
We’ve found that the couples who get the most benefit from the online marriage retreat all do the same four things.
1. Put it on the calendar like it’s a flight you paid for. Tell people you’re unavailable. Treat it like you left, even though you didn’t.
2. Send the kids somewhere. Grandparents, a friend, a sitter, anywhere.
3. Do the exercises, including the one you want to skip. The sessions are the teaching. The exercises at the end of each session are the actual workshop.
4. Book the coaching call, if you need it. It’s free, and the research on follow-through is clear about why it matters.

The river was never impressive
There’s a biblical story about a military commander named Naaman, who traveled a long way to be healed of a skin disease. When he arrived, he expected a spectacle. Instead, the prophet he had come to see didn’t even come out to meet him. The prophet just sent word through an assistant for Naaman to go take a bath in the Jordan, a nearby ordinary muddy river.
Naaman was livid. This instruction seemed too basic. He had cleaner rivers back home! He wanted something that matched the size of his problem, and washing in a local river felt insulting. So he stormed off.
But his servants talked him into sticking around and just trying it. So he went to the river, washed, and came out healed (2 Kings 5:14).
Sometimes I think about that story when couples tell me the online option doesn’t feel like enough for what they’re dealing with. Travelling to a hotel ballroom in another state might feel like it matches the size of what you’re facing. Your living room doesn’t. But remember: what heals a marriage is never about the venue. It’s the willingness to actually get in the water.
Common questions about online marriage retreats
Do online marriage retreats actually work?
Yes, for most couples who complete the program. Randomized research on web-based relationship programs shows significant gains in relationship satisfaction. The Renovation Marriage online workshop results match those of our in-person events, with 98% of couples reporting significant progress. Completing the sessions matters more than format.
Is an online marriage retreat as good as in person?
For most couples, yes, although each format has advantages. In-person offers a true escape from home and the encouragement of other couples. Online offers privacy, no travel cost, and the ability to pause when needed, instead of racing a clock. The right choice depends on your environment and your circumstances.
How long does an online marriage retreat take?
Our online workshop covers the same nine sessions as the in-person weekend, and we recommend following the same Friday-to-Sunday schedule. Because the sessions are pre-recorded, you can also spread them across several days if that better fits your schedule. We’ve found that couples who block out dedicated time finish at a much higher rate.
What if only one spouse wants to try an online marriage retreat?
Start the conversation with the format, not the problem. A reluctant spouse who refuses a hotel weekend with strangers will often agree to something private at home with no audience. Lowering the barrier is often what gets a hesitant husband or wife to say yes.
So, do online marriage retreats work? Yes, when the couple shows up for them. If you can travel and get away from the chores and distractions of home, then go in person. If travel is out of reach, or if you want the flexibility to work through the sessions at your own pace, then the online workshop gives you the same nine sessions and the same tools. Pick your dates, arrange the childcare, and get in the water.
